The third and latest installation of the annual UWI/RBC Race for the Kids attracted the largest participation to date with 2 200 having registered for the six kilometre event, which ran off from outside the 3Ws Pavilion at Cave Hill campus on March 10, 2018.

A wave of blue surged uphill at steady pace, determined to walk, run or wheel themselves along the route. One participant, a member of a large Chinese contingent who competed, walked the entire route on crutches.

Participants passed through Wanstead Terrace, Independence Drive, Sugar Cane Avenue, Thorpes Main Road, Cave Hill road, and returned to The UWI along Gordon Cummins Highway. As customary, the journey was made lighter with an accompaniment of pulsating rhythms from a music truck which brought up the rear.

In post-race remarks, Principal and Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Eudine Barriteau expressed pleasure at the numbers supporting the cause and urged UWI alumni in the Diaspora to join next year’s race when they return to Barbados to take part in Government’s Vision 2020 initiative. That initiative encourages Barbadians abroad to come home to assist in the island’s economic rebuilding.

Barriteau also noted that the race highlights the ways in which the corporate community, and everyday Barbadians maintain strong linkages to the University.

“This race represents to us how the corporate community supports The UWI [including] RBC, Digicel and other corporate sponsors who joined,” she said. “We are also pleased with the individuals who supported, as it . . . shows that The UWI goes into the community and that the Barbadian community supports UWI. We feel very good and proud of that.”

This year, proceeds from the Race will be used to assist with the campus’s First Year Experience (FYE) programme which helps freshers become assimilated to campus life, as well as the Cave Hill Campus Scholarship Fund.
