Triennial Awards for Women Next Month

For Release Upon Receipt - Wednesday, February 20, 2019

The Institute for Gender and Development Studies: Nita Barrow Unit (IGDS:NBU) in association with the Community Development Department in the Ministry of Youth and Community Empowerment, will host the Sixth Triennial Awards for Women to mark International Women’s Day this year.

The triennial awards ceremony was inaugurated in 2003, in collaboration with the Community Development Department of the then Ministry of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development. It was created to honour women who have made an outstanding contribution to Barbadian society. Due to the success of the first ceremony, it was institutionalized as a triennial event and has since honoured ninety great Barbadian and Caribbean women.

This year, the contribution of twelve (12) Barbadian women – comprising one awardee from each parish and one youth awardee – will be celebrated.

Head of the IGDS:NBU, Dr. Halimah DeShong, said that the awards highlighted the exemplary work of ordinary women who impacted society in outstanding ways.

“The IGDS:NBU recognizes the significant contribution that Barbadian women from every sector of the society make to the development of the nation, and is aware that the contribution in many ways goes without the proper recognition. The Triennial Awards for Women therefore highlights the invaluable work of women who do not have a national profile, but are actively involved in their communities.”

The ceremony is slated for Saturday, March 9th at 7:00 p.m. in the Walcott Warner Theatre, Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination, at The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus.
